- Encryption at Rest: All sensitive journal content, highlights, challenges, and goals are encrypted using AES-256-GCM encryption before being stored in our database.
- Encryption in Transit: All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.
- Access Controls: Your data is isolated by user ID. Only you can access your data, and all access is logged for security auditing.
- Authentication: We use secure OAuth authentication (Google, GitHub) and never store your passwords.
- Audit Logging: All access to sensitive data is logged, including who accessed what and when.
- Database Security: Our database (MongoDB Atlas) is protected with IP whitelisting and secure credentials.
Important: While we implement strong security measures, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, but we are committed to protecting your data to the best of our ability.
Analytics and Life Insights
Life's Edge provides personalized insights by analyzing patterns across your journaling, goals, and spending to help you see how your daily choices connect to your values:
- Cross-Feature Analysis: We analyze connections between your journal entries, goals, and spending patterns to show you how different areas of your life connect. This analysis is performed only on your encrypted data and stays private to you.
- Values Alignment Insights: We compare your stated values (from your profile and goals) with your actual choices (journaling, spending, goal progress) to generate alignment scores and insights.
- Pattern Recognition: We identify patterns in your behavior (e.g., mood correlations with spending, goal achievement patterns) to help you understand your life better.
- Privacy-First Analytics: All analytics are processed locally on our servers using only your data. We do not share your personal insights, patterns, or analysis with third parties.
- Your Control: You can opt out of advanced analytics features while still using core platform features. You can also delete your insights at any time.
Your Data, Your Insights: All analytics are generated from your own data and are visible only to you. We never use your personal insights for advertising, marketing, or sharing with other users without your explicit consent.
Data Storage
Your data is stored securely in:
- MongoDB Atlas: Our primary database, hosted on MongoDB Atlas cloud infrastructure with encryption at rest enabled.
- Location: Data is stored in secure data centers managed by MongoDB Atlas. The specific region depends on your account configuration.
- Backups: Regular backups are maintained for disaster recovery. Backup retention is set to 30 days, after which backups are permanently deleted.
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your data only in the following circumstances:
With Your Consent
You control what you share with friends through our privacy settings. You can make journal entries public, share items in chat, or keep everything private.
Third-Party Services
- Google OAuth: We use Google Sign-In for authentication. Google receives your email and basic profile information. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- GitHub OAuth: We use GitHub Sign-In for authentication. GitHub receives your email and basic profile information. See GitHub's Privacy Statement.
- MongoDB Atlas: Our database hosting provider. They have access to encrypted data but cannot decrypt it without the encryption key, which we control.
Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government regulation, or to protect our rights, property, or safety.
Admin Access
Platform administrators cannot view individual user data, including journal entries. Admins can only see aggregate statistics (total users, counts, etc.). All admin access attempts are logged in our audit trail.
Your Privacy Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal data:
Right to Access
You can access all your data at any time through the "Export My Data" feature in your profile settings. This includes all journal entries, vault items, goals, and other content you've created.
Right to Deletion
You can delete individual journal entries, which permanently removes them from our database. You can also delete your entire account, which permanently deletes all your data, including journal entries, vault items, goals, and all associated information. Deleted data is removed from backups within 30 days.
Right to Correction
You can edit or update your data at any time through the platform. Profile information, journal entries, and other content can be modified directly in the app.
Right to Data Portability
You can export all your data in JSON format through the "Export My Data" feature in your profile settings. This allows you to take your data with you.
Right to Privacy Controls
You have granular control over what appears in your activity feed. You can control visibility of journal entries, vault items, goals, prayer requests, and tracking data individually. You can also control sharing with specific friends and groups.
Data Retention
We retain your data as follows:
- Active Accounts: We retain your data for as long as your account is active.
- Deleted Entries: When you delete a journal entry or other content, it is permanently removed from our database immediately.
- Deleted Accounts: When you delete your account, all your data is permanently deleted immediately, including journal entries, vault items, goals, and all associated information.
- Backups: Deleted data is removed from backups within 30 days of deletion.
- Audit Logs: Security audit logs are retained for 90 days, then anonymized or deleted.
Cookies and Tracking
We use the following technologies:
- Session Cookies: Required for authentication and maintaining your login session. These are essential for the platform to function.
- No Third-Party Tracking: We do not use third-party advertising or analytics tracking cookies.
- Local Storage: We use browser local storage to remember your preferences (theme, draft content, etc.). This data stays on your device.
Children's Privacy
Life's Edge is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately so we can delete such information.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
